Aberdeen airport evacuated over suspect package

However, passengers were later allowed back in the building after the package was declared safe.

Police were called out to the airport in Dyce to help search passengers as they made their way back to the terminal to board planes.

Some flights were delayed due to the incident.

An Aberdeen International Airport spokesman said the package was examined and declared safe but refused to give any further details about the item.

He said: “At approximately 10am police were called to a report of a suspicious item at Aberdeen International Airport.

“The terminal was evacuated as a precautionary measure and the incident has since been stood down.”

Three Eastern Airways flights travelling to Scatsta and a Flybe flight to Sumburgh were delayed because passengers had to be processed through security again.

A police spokesman said: “Aberdeen Airport requested Police Scotland to assist with the re-searching of passengers.”

Aberdeen International Airport caters for holidaymakers and the transportation of oil workers with 3.8 million passengers using the facility last year.

In 2005, the discovery of a mystery powder on a plane at the airport sparked an emergency probe.

The substance was found in a bag in the hold of a KLM plane - but tests later confirmed the powder was only flour.

The 78 passengers and five crew on the Aberdeen-Amsterdam flight, as well as airport personnel, were isolated for nearly six hours as a precaution.

The flight had been due to take off for the Netherlands but everyone was told to remain on board until forensic experts identified the white sub
