The actor Sir Sean Connery, best known for his iconic portrayal of James Bond, has died at the age of 90, his family has told the BBC.
The Edinburgh-born star was the first to bring the role of Ian Fleming's book series to the big screen and appeared in seven of the cinematic spy thrillers (every film from Dr. No to You Only Live Twice, plus Diamonds Are Forever and Never Say Never Again).
Sir Sean's acting career spanned seven decades and also included films like The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.
'The best Bond'

Others, including football presenter Gary Lineker, described Sir Sean as "the best Bond".
Shaken and, on this occasion, stirred to hear that Sir Sean Connery has passed away. Had the pleasure of playing golf with him on a couple of occasions. A real character and for me, the best Bond. James Bond should be immortal. RIP

RIP Sean Connery, got the chance to work with him on First Knight in 1995. He heard my accent, asked me where I was from and then called me ‘Yorkie’ for the rest of the shoot, made a young actor feel 10’ tall. The biggest hand I’ve ever shaken too.

How infinitely sad to hear the news Sir Sean Connery has passed away. He and Roger were friends for many decades and Roger always maintained Sean was the best ever James Bond. RIP

Sean Connery was a movie legend, even far into his golden years. Our strongest Bonds were formed by him, and he was Untouchable. He passed today at age 90, a suave hero to the end.
