Lockdown Brits drinking lots more tea

Since lockdown began, millions of Brits are consuming an extra two cups of tea a day on average while stuck at home, a new study has revealed.

Caffeine’s popularity as a natural stimulant is ingrained into our daily routine, as across the UK, 84 per cent of us drink at least one cuppa each day.

But since the UK was placed in lockdown on March 23, tea drinkers across the nation have adapted by drinking an extra 111,972,000 cups of tea a day!

A poll ran by NetVoucherCodes.co.uk found that Brits are enjoying on average an extra two cups of tea a day, compared to what they’d usually drink.

That is enough to almost fill ten Olympic sized swimming pools.

The research has also revealed that Britain has consumed 965,511 extra pints of milk than we would normally through additional tea consumption.

A spokesperson said: “We knew Britain was a nation of tea lovers, but we didn’t know we loved it quite this much.

“Tea has been a staple part of our society and diet since the 17th Century, when it was first imported from China, so there’s no surprise we’re turning to a ‘proper brew’ for comfort.

“On average, 55,986,000 Brits drink 1.78 cups per day in normal times, but these aren’t normal times, and our research found that we are drinking almost double the amount of tea in lockdown.

“This might not be a bad thing, unless you have three teaspoons of sugar in each ‘cuppa’.

“We were really surprised by these figures, as even without the lockdown us Brits would drink around 36 billion cuppas a year, so it’s hard to imagine how many we’ll go through this year.”

While many Brits have become accustomed to working from home every day, others have been unable to work at all.

The way in which our lives have transformed in such a short space of time has heavily impacted our daily routines, which has seemingly resulted in an increasing number of ‘cuppas’.
