Here's who stars in Netflix's new show, Ragnarok

As 2020 began, Netflix continued flaunting its ability to pull hit shows from unlikely places with its environmentally-minded Norwegian drama about the modern-day descendants of Norse gods, Ragnarok.

The show takes place in Edda, a Norwegian town which has been ravaged by industrial pollution and the effects of climate change.

It tells the story of a teenage boy who discovers that he has inherited the powers of Thor which he will use to try and alter his hometown’s fate.

The show’s angsty tone and high-school setting have seen it compared to Twilight by many viewers.

Featuring an all-Norwegian cast, it’s likely that many UK viewers won’t be familiar with Ragnarok’s stars so here is a quick guide.

David Stakston – Magne

Magne is the central character of the show – a seemingly unremarkable teenage boy who suddenly finds himself able to do incredible, Thor-like things like hurling a sledgehammer thousands of miles.

David Stakston previously appeared in another high school drama called SKAM, which received a huge amount of acclaim in Norway, partially for the way in which it tackled serious issues like sexual abuse.

Stakston in particular drew praise for his portrayal of Magnus Fossbakken, a student whose mother suffers from bipolar disorder.

Jonas Strand Gravli – Laurits

Magnes’ brother, Laurits, is played by Jonas Stand Gravli.

Although he is still early in his career, Gravli is no stranger to the Netflix spotlight having previously starred in the streaming service’s movie, 22 July – a dramatisation of the right-wing terrorist attack which saw 77 school children killed.

He has also appeared in the detective series Wisting and Amundsen, the story of famed Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen.

Theresa Frostad Eggesbø – Saxa

While the other teens are concerned about the pollution destroying the environment and wreaking havoc on their town, Saxa believes that the turbulent conditions are actually signs of an impending Judgement Day.

Saxa is played by Theresa Frostad Eggesbø, a young Norwegian actress who is also pursuing a career in music. She recently moved to Liverpool to help further this goal and has recorded several singles which can be found on Spotify.

She has also previously starred in films like The Comet and November, winning the Lisbon International Film Festival’s best acting prize for the latter.

Herman Tømmeraas – Fjor

Fjor is the popular, rebellious kid who is assigned to look out for Magne.

He is played by Herman Tømmeraas, an actor who has also worked as a dancer, model and producer. He starred alongside David Stakston on Skam, playing the on-and-off love interest of one of the series’ main cast.

Herman has also developed a substantial social media following, with over 175,000 followers on Twitter and a massive Instagram following as well.

Who else makes up the cast?

Outside of its young central cast, Ragnarok also employs a host of other multi-talented people from stage actor Bjørn Sundquist (who some may remember from Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) to former gymnast Gísli Örn Garðarsson and actor/film critic Synnøve Macody Lund.
