Youth treated for chill after rescue swim

A YOUTH who swam 300 metres to shore when a jet ski failed off the coast was treated for "mild hypothermia".

The 19-year-old had been with a man in his 30s on Thursday when the water-based craft broke down near Pease Bay, Berwickshire, stranding them.

The teenager raised the alarm by swimming to shore and a member of the public picked the other man up in a small boat.

Fearing choppy conditions could topple the vessel, Dunbar RNLI launched a lifeboat and took the man to shore.

Neither man was wearing suitable buoyancy equipment.

RNLI coxswain Gary Fairbairn said: "All we can do is keep expressing concern for safety and ask people to take precautions out on the water by wearing the right gear and maybe having a flare. This could have been a very tricky situation if it had not been for the brave actions of a member of the public."
