Youth drives car into tree

A YOUNG driver whose car ploughed into a tree on an unclassified road remains in a serious condition in hospital.

The 20-year-old was travelling along a country lane between Bathgate and Cairnpapple Hill when the accident occurred at 5pm on Thursday.

A passing driver raised the alarm and fire crews, police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene. Ambulance crews arrived to find smoke pouring from the car, and crews fought for around an hour to release the man.

The specialist trauma unit Medic One rushed the man, who had serious injuries to his face and chest, to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he remained last night.
