WW2 bomb claim causes panic hours before opening of Donald Trump’s Menie Estate golf course

A claim that there was unexploded wartime ordnance under the greens of Donald Trump’s new Aberdeen golf course caused alarm the day before its official opening.

Police received a call on Monday from a member of the public who claimed there were unexploded WW2 devices buried in the soil.

The Trump Organisation said that the complaint was made by a “disgruntled” former contractor.

It is understood that the claim was based on metal shards being unearthed during groundworks in May.

The US businessman’s head of development, George Sorial, said the claims were “ludicrous”.

He said: “The allegations were made by a disgruntled ex-contractor.”

Grampian Police confirmed that no action was taken after the rogue call.

A spokeswoman said: “We can confirm we received an uncorroborated claim of a historic device buried at the Menie Estate.

“After inquiries were carried out, Grampian Police are satisfied that no further action is required.”

Trump opened the course on Tuesday in front of 150 guests including former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie.
