'Wrong kidney' case inquiry

A SURGEON involved in the case of a patient whose healthy kidney was removed, leaving the cancerous one in place, is to face medical watchdogs next week.

Riza Murat Gurun will go before a General Medical Council (GMC) Fitness to Practise Panel on Monday following the incident in March 2006.

John Heron awoke after surgery at Ayr Hospital to be told that his healthy kidney had been removed and the diseased one left inside his body. Mr Gurun, who was a consultant urological surgeon with NHS Ayrshire and Arran, is also accused of failing to record the results of pre-operative tests and whether consent was obtained.

The GMC said: "It is further alleged that, in relation to one of these patients, Mr Gurun performed surgery without undertaking the necessary pre-operative assessments."
