Would-be US pub landlords forge ahead to take over remotest bar on Scotland's Knoydart peninsula

A FAMILY from California are making a 10,000 mile round trip to view mainland Britain's remotest pub which has been put up for sale.

Normally The Old Forge on the Knoydart peninsula in Scotland can only be reached by boat or by walking from the nearest road 18 miles over 3,500ft hills.

The award-winning Old Forge at Inverie is 45 minutes away by ferry from Mallaig or 20 minutes by a daily water taxi.

It has been put on the market by Ian and Jackie Robertson at offers over 790,000.

But now one intrepid family from California have booked a viewing and will be travelling in the next few weeks.

Agents Knight Frank, said yesterday that it has had over 20 "serious" inquiries including from a family in Montreal, Canada, people in Switzerland – and from those in one other European country – as well as all over the UK.

"The people who want to view from California are originally from the UK," said David Reid of Knight Frank.

"They want to return to Britain and are looking for a business that is both profitable and offers a lifestyle choice.

"What has attracted them to The Old Forge is their love of sailing. In fact, it is a factor with many of the interested parties.

"The Old Forge is a hugely successful business with serious profits – well over six figures.

"As a result it has attracted worldwide interest. We also have a family from Canada who want to come and view as well as those in Europe. We have had inquiries from all over the UK including at least two from London.

"But given its remoteness – and the time it takes to carry out viewings – we don't expect a sale to be reached for a couple of months yet."

The pub serves a community of around 115 – many of whom are forestry workers, fishermen or who work in tourism-related businesses on the estate.
