Would-be teachers may face basic skills test

TEACHERS could undergo basic literacy and numeracy assessments before being allowed on to an education university course, according to a new report.

Before entering teacher training, students would be required to show a certain standard, the Donaldson review is expected to say. The report, compiled by former HM Inspectorate of Education boss Graham Donaldson, on teacher training is due to be published today.

In February 2010, the Scottish Government asked Mr Donaldson to undertake a review of teacher education in Scotland. His report is being presented to education secretary Michael Russell. The call to introduce competency assessments for potential teachers is one of a series of recommendations.

Other proposals expected in the report include giving would-be teachers more practical experience in schools, as well as increasing the range of training courses to attract a range of people to the profession.
