Troops and rebels clash in Timbuktu

Malian troops searched houses in Timbuktu yesterday morning following fighting with Islamist rebels who had infiltrated the northern desert town.

Residents said calm returned by late Sunday after airstrikes by French fighter jets backing the Malian troops forced rebels to shelter indoors.
