Tensions rise as Israel backs Jerusalem flats

ISRAEL has approved the construction of four apartment buildings in disputed east Jerusalem, officials said yesterday, fuelling tensions with the Palestinians at a time when the US is working to get peace talks moving again.

The Palestinians claim east Jerusalem for a future capital and demand all building there stop before talks resume. The 24-unit project is being developed in an Arab neighbourhood.
