Six hurt in knife attack at major China station

SIX people have been injured in a knife attack at one of China’s busiest railway stations, police said.

The incident happened at Guangzhou station in southern Guangdong province, the city’s police said on their microblog.

Officers arrived on the scene as passengers were being attacked, and they shot and subdued a male suspect who had a knife after he failed to respond to a police warning, the statement said.

It was not clear from the statement whether there was more than one attacker. The Guangzhou Daily cited witnesses as saying there were four attackers.

No possible motive for the attack was given.

Police said six people were injured and taken to hospital, not including the suspect.

In March, 33 people were injured in a another stabbing attack at a railway station in south-west China which was blamed on separatists in the country’s far west.

China has also seen mass stabbings carried out by people bearing grudges against society or suffering from mental illness.
