Scottish teenager being treated in Greek hospital for meningitis

A Scottish teenager was in intensive care in a Greek hospital today after falling ill with meningitis while on holiday with friends.

Robert Oates, 17, who left school in June, is in a stable condition in hospital in Athens.

His parents have travelled to Greece to be at his side.

Robert is a former pupil of Jordanhill School in Glasgow.

Headteacher Dr Paul Thomson said: "Following a diagnosis of meningitis, Robert is in intensive care in Athens where his condition is stable.

"His family would like to thank the medical services in Greece for their care and attention to Robert's needs and his friends for their support when Robert became ill.

"Messages of goodwill and support have gone out to Robert and his parents from the school and their many friends in the community."

The teenager was reportedly holidaying on the island of Zakynthos when he fell ill, and was then transferred to Athens.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We are aware that a British national was hospitalised with meningitis in Zakynthos on the 13 August 2010 and we are providing consular assistance."
