President Barack Obama tweeted via the White House’s account: “The UK is an extraordinary partner for America and a force for good in an unstable world. I hope it remains strong, robust and united,”

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew also said there were potentially significant economic ramifications from the vote and that a strong United Kingdom was important.

Ex-president Bill Clinton has also argued the case for Scotland to stay together with the rest of the UK.
