Scots flight diverts after passengers threaten cabin crew

JET2 has banned 14 travellers for life after they caused an aeroplane bound for Spain to divert to Portugal.

The flight, from Glasgow to Tenerife, diverted to Faro after the pilot became concerned for the crew’s safety after the 14 passengers, all male, began threatening the cabin crew.

The group were escorted off the flight by police officers at Faro airport after the aircraft had landed.

A Jet2 spokeswoman told the Daily Record: “The Glasgow to Tenerife flight diverted to Faro on Friday evening so the airline could offload a group of 14 disruptive passengers.

“Their behaviour towards the cabin crew got so aggressive and verbally abusive that the captain made the immediate decision to divert for the safety of both his team and the other customers.

“The group were escorted off the aircraft by police in Faro and the flight continued on to Tenerife.”

The spokeswoman confirmed that the airline was working with the authorities in probing the incident.

A Glasgow Airport spokesperson said that no problems had been flagged up prior to departure while Jet2 chief Phil Ward reiterated the airline’s approach to unruly passengers.

Jet2 has previously made headlines for its zero tolerance approach towards drunk and unruly passengers, under its Onboard Together campaign.

In April, a Scottish stag party caused chaos on a Jet2 flight from Glasgow to Alicante, wreaking havoc on the early morning flight by drinking heavily and abusing fellow passengers and airline staff.

In June, the airline called for curbs on alcohol sales at airports, and threatened a blanket ban on booze on its flights after suffering a 20 per cent in crease in disruptive passengers.

The following month, a 21-year-old man was banned from Jet2 flights for life after verbally abusing a female member of the cabin crew.

Less than a week later, two men were also handed life bans from the airline and a third a six-month ban after one of the ‘worst cases of drunken and abusive behaviour’ on a flight from Glasgow to Dalaman.

The trio had initially been held by Turkish police for alleged ‘extreme anti-social behaviour’ with Police Scotland also making inquiries.
