Scotland fans help clear snow on Novi Sad pitch

MEMBERS of the Tartan Army helped match officials clear snow from the pitch at the Karadjordje Stadium in Serbia ahead of last night’s match.

Braving the elements in kilts, they were handed shovels as the Serbian Football Association organised a snow-clearing operation at the venue ahead of the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Scotland.

Details of the clear-up were reported through the Scottish Football Association’s official Twitter account.

Around 1,200 Tartan Army members were expected to attend the Group A game in Novi Sad, which is about an hour from the Scottish team’s base in Belgrade.

Snow had been falling in Serbia since the early hours of the morning yesterday. However, officials sought to reassure fans that the match would still go ahead.

In a Twitter update, the SFA said: “Serbia v Scotland on as it stands. Serbian FA clearing pitch of snow. We will provide updates if the situation changes.”

The UK has been suffering the coldest March in 50 years, but for Scottish fans who arrived in Serbia yesterday, the weather awaiting them was no better.

However, despite the cold and a run of disappointing performances, they were happy to roll up their sleeves and help the Serbian football authorities make sure the game could go ahead.

In fact, a few hardy souls did not even have sleeves, as they set about clearing the snow while bare-chested.

Before kick-off yesterday, Scotland were bottom of the table in Group A, with two points from five games following Friday night’s 2-1 defeat by Wales at Hampden Park.

In last night’s game, Scotland were beaten 2-0 by Serbia.
