School gunman killed by police

Russian police stormed an apartment yesterday and killed a man after he had fired shots at a nursery school, shattering a window of a gym where children were playing. A teacher was injured by flying glass.

The man, thought to be 51 or 52, fired several shots with a hunting rifle from a window of his apartment in the town of Salavat, about 930 miles south-east of Moscow.

Police surrounded the gunman’s home and demanded he surrender, but he refused and opened fire when police stormed his apartment.
