The airline’s chief executive Michael O’Leary told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung in an interview that prices for current long-haul aircraft are too costly, and out of stock owing to bulk orders from Gulf airlines including Emirates.

However, Mr O’Leary believes that aeroplanes will become available for cheaper over the course of the next few years that would allow the low-cost airline to expand its routes and offer flights to the USA by 2019.

Mr O’Leary added that plans for a sister company tasked with operating the transatlantic flights were in the pipeline, with up to 10 European airports linking up with between 10 and 15 destinations in the US, with prices starting at as low as €10 (around £8.15).

As is standard on Ryanair’s European routes, extra charges would apply for baggage and in-flight entertainment, with an option for business travellers.
