Russia taps into new gas pipeline

Russia yesterday opened a new €6.4 billion (£5.2bn) pipeline under the Baltic Sea directly linking Germany with Siberia’s vast natural gas reserves, part of an effort to maintain its hold on energy supplies to Europe.

The 761-mile pipeline takes gas from Portovaya Bay in northern Russia to Lubmin on Germany’s north-east coast as part of the Nord Stream project.
