Residents save £110k for haven

Residents of Copenhagen’s Christiania haven yesterday raised more than one million Danish kroner (£110,000) in a first day of fundraising to save it.

According to the deal made with the government in April, residents must pay DK76m before 2018 to buy the land. The first payment of DK43.3m is due on 15 April next year.

The sanctuary was created in 1971 when hippies began squatting at a derelict 18th-century naval base on state land.
