Qatar throws Egypt £1.9bn lifeline

Gas-rich Qatar has thrown another unconditional financial lifeline to Egypt, as it struggles to secure an IMF loan to ease its deepening economic crisis.

Qatari prime minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim al-Thani yesterday said the Gulf state would provide $3 billion (£1.9bn) on top of some $5bn it had already given Cairo, and would extend gas supplies to Egypt this summer as needed.
