Poles march in Warsaw protest

Thousands of Poles attended a rally in Warsaw yesterday to mark the 30th anniversary of the communist-era martial law crackdown and in protest against calls for deeper integration with the European Union.

The march was led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the conservative and nationalistic leader of Law and Justice, Poland’s biggest opposition party.

Mr Kaczynski is angry about recent calls by the government, particularly foreign minister Radek Sikorski, for deeper political integration to enforce fiscal discipline and prevent another debt crisis. Mr Kaczynski said that would erode Poland’s national sovereignty.
