In pictures: Syria images win Pulitzer Prize

FIVE photojournalists covering the Syrian civil war have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for their work.

Associated Press photographers Rodrigo Abd, Manu Brabo, Narciso Contreras, Khalil Hamra and Muhammed Muhesein were awarded the journalism industry’s highest honour in the Breaking News Photography category.

The photographers will also receive $10,000 for “their compelling coverage of the civil war in Syria, producing memorable images under extreme hazard.”

Another photographer posted in Syria, Javier Manzano, won the Pulitzer Prize in the Feature Photography category for an image of two Syrian rebels holding position inside a bullethole-ridden safehouse.

Finalists for the award included staff at The Denver Post for their coverage of the Aurora, Colorado shootings, and The New York Times’ Tyler Hicks for his images of a decimated Gaza following a retaliatory bombing by Israel.
