Chris Reynolds told the Philadelphia Daily News that he opened his email statement from the company, and was stunned to see his reported balance was $92,233,720,368,547,800. However, by the time he clicked through to view his account the error had already been corrected.

Reynolds, 56, told the paper: “At first I thought that I owed quadrillions. It was quite a big surprise.”

When asked what he would do with the money if allowed to keep it, Reynolds said he would pay off the US national debt first - then buy his local baseball team.

In a statement, PayPal told the BBC: “This was obviously an error and we appreciate that Mr Reynolds understands this was the case.”
