Parachute tragedy on Eiffel Tower

A NORWEGIAN man was killed jumping from the Eiffel Tower after his parachute got caught up in the structure of the Paris landmark.

The 31-year-old entered the tower with a hidden parachute and a helmet with a small video camera attached to it before jumping from the 380ft-high second deck.

Investigators believe his parachute somehow got stuck in the structure, detaching it from his body. He continued his fall without the parachute, crashing on to the first deck 200ft below.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that the man had been planning to film his jump to publicise a Norwegian brand of clothes.

The Eiffel Tower has long attracted daredevils. A British couple successfully parachuted from the top deck in 1984, while a New Zealander bungee-jumped off the second level in 1987.
