New election blow for Merkel’s party

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s centre-right bloc suffered another defeat yesterday, this time in a regional election in Germany’s poorest state, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

The Social Democrats, who lead the state government, won nearly 37 per cent of the vote, with Mrs Merkel’s conservative Christian Democratic Union slipping below 24 per cent.
