Nando’s drops Mugabe TV ad after threats

South African restaurant chain Nando’s has withdrawn an advert that depicts Zimbabwe president Robrt Mugabe as “the last dictator standing.”

Nando’s South Africa said “political reaction” in Zimbabwe, including threats against managers, staff and customers at outlets across the country, led to the advertbeing pulled.

It shows Robert Mugabe dining alone at Christmas, his empty table set for departed dictators, including Muammar al-Gaddafi.

On Tuesday, a militant youth group in Zimbabwe loyal to Mugabe called for a boycott of the chain unless the 60-second commercial was dropped and an apology made to Mugabe.

“No TV commercial is worth risking the safety of Nando’s staff and customers,” Nando’s said in a statement.
