Naked man cowers from dogs in latest prisoner photo

THE latest graphic photograph to emerge of abuse in a United States-run Iraqi jail shows a naked prisoner apparently contorted with terror as US military dogs strain at their leads, just feet away.

According to the New Yorker magazine, which obtained the picture, additional photos show the same man crying out in pain as a soldier sits on him and blood flows from his leg.

The prisoner abuse scandal has seriously damaged the US’s mission in Iraq, with just weeks to go before sovereignty is handed over to the Iraqi people.

According to reports in the US, more photos are expected to emerge - including images of a US soldier having sex with a female inmate and pictures of Iraqi guards committing rape.

Further images of US soldiers mistreating a corpse are also said to be in circulation in defence circles, and are likely to be leaked to the media.

The Bush administration has repeatedly blamed the scandal on a small number of out-of-control soldiers who were guarding inmates at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad.

But lawyers and families of the accused soldiers have said their relatives were acting on orders - specifically from intelligence agencies who interrogated the prisoners. A 24-year-old military policeman was ordered on Sunday day to stand trial in the first court martial in connection with the abuse.
