Mysterious ‘sea serpent’ oarfish caught on film
An elusive and mysterious giant fish, which is thought to be the source of ancient myths about sea serpents, has been caught on film.
The footage of the species, which is thought to be the longest boned fish in existence, was captured by researchers who were investigating the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2011.
The oarfish was said to be around eight feet long and was seen swimming over 300 feet beneath the surface.
The species are rarely seen due to their preference for deep water, but some are known to have reached as long as 56 feet long.
