Mazda recalls US cars over ‘dangerous spiders’

CAR giant Mazda has had to recall over 40,000 cars in the United States - because spiders weaving webs can cause the fuel tank to crack.

The firm has recalled 42,000 Mazda6 models with 2.5-litre engines from 2010-2012, after it was revealed that the venomous yellow sac spider - which is attracted to hydrocarbons - has a tendency to construct webs in vent hoses, causing pressure to build in the fuel tank, increasing the risk of fuel leaks and fires.

Mazda recalled cars in 2011 for the same reason, but found that the spiders could still get past covers placed on the vent line.

The car company will update its vehicles’ software starting from this month, to ensure that pressure in the fuel tank does not build up.

Mazda confirmed that no injuries or fires have been reported due to the issue.
