Lord McConnell falls down drain in Malawi

SCOTLAND’S former First Minister took a tumble in the dark last night and fell down a drain in Africa.

Jack McConnell, who served as First Minister of Scotland between 2001 and 2007 before being made a Lord, was in Malawi in south east Africa when he came a cropper.

The 54-year-old, officially Baron McConnell of Glenscorrodale, has a long history of helping to tackle poverty in Africa and regularly jets off to the continent to support various initiatives.

He inspired the signing of the Scotland Malawi Partnership, which was set up to cement links between the two countries.

Writing on Twitter last night, Lord McConnell said: “Spent the evening discussing the importance of better electricity for #‎Malawi.

“Walked out to the dark street and fell down a drain. #‎ouch.”

David Sanders, of Edinburgh, said: “Hope he didn’t fall after sampling the local moonshine - tasty, but super strong.”
