Linda Norgrove’s parents raise funds for charity on anniversary of her death

THE parents of Scottish aid worker Linda Norgrove, who was killed in Afghanistan, will today spend the first anniversary of her death raising funds for the charity set up in her name.

John and Linda Norgrove will run in the inaugural Valtos Peninsula 10k Run, which is being held in the community on Lewis where their daughter grew up.

As well as entrants from the local area, people are being encouraged to take part remotely by running 10k wherever they are in the world, wearing a foundation T-shirt, and posting photographs on the foundation’s website. Entries have come from across the world including Antarctica, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Uganda. Sixty T-shirts have been sent to the US alone.

Mr and Mrs Norgrove said: “We wanted something good to come out of a terrible experience and we know that Linda would have been pleased that we are carrying on her work.

“She loved Afghanistan and its people and was passionate about trying to help improve the situation for women and children in particular.

“It is fitting that her friends and family will be running, jogging and walking around the area she loved to mark the anniversary of her death.

“It is also very appropriate, given her love for other countries, that so many people are taking part in the run remotely from all corners of the world.”

Linda, 36, was kidnapped on 26 September, 2010, and was killed on 8 October by a grenade thrown by a US soldier as a special forces squad attempted a night rescue.
