Labour weakened after speaker quits

The Australian parliament’s speaker resigned yesterday over a sexual harassment lawsuit, weakening the government’s tenuous grip on power.

The Labour government recruited Peter Slipper from opposition ranks to the speaker’s post last November in a move that effectively gave the administration a two-seat majority on most votes.
