Kenyatta’s Kenyan election win valid, says Court

THE results of Kenya’s presidential election on March 4 are valid and Uhuru Kenyatta has won, Kenya’s Supreme Court said today.

Today’s verdict - following a drawn-out court case which riveted the nation - means that Mr Kenyatta will be sworn in as president early next month.

He will become the second sitting president in Africa to face charges at the International Criminal Court.

He and Deputy President-elect William Ruto both face charges related to having helped orchestrate the 2007-08 post-election violence. Both deny the charges.

Mr Ruto’s trial is set to begin in late May and Mr Kenyatta’s in July. Mr Kenyatta has promised to report to The Hague.

Lawyers for presidential challenger Raila Odinga argued at the Supreme Court that the election was marred by irregularities.
