Kenyan presidential vote goes to wire

THE race to become Kenya’s next president was too close to call last night as the count continued.

The latest tally of votes showed leading candidate, Uhuru Kenyatta, the deputy prime minister, on 49.93 per cent, with nearly 90 per cent of polling stations counted. Reaching the 50 per cent mark would see him avoid a run-off against rival candidate, prime minister Raila Odinga.

A western observer said the consensus was forming around the belief that Mr Kenyatta was likely to win outright.
