International Space Station to get 3D printer

Astronauts on the International Space Station are to get their very own 3D printer, allowing them to make vital tools, components, and items to make their stay easier.

The device was constructed by space component manufacturer Made In Space and is set to arrive in 2014.

The printer has been specially adapted to operate in a zero gravity environment, and will reportedly be able to recreate around 30% of all spare parts on the station.

3D printing technology has been hailed as the future, with the ability to design and create small plastic items which can be custom built for any purpose.

Earlier this year it was revealed that the European Space Agency are investigating the possibility of using a 3D printer to create an entire base on the moon, using soil from the lunar surface as a contruction material.
