Honeymoon Briton killed by a shark

A BRITISH honeymooner was killed by a shark attack in the Seychelles yesterday, as his bride looked on in horror from the beach.

The 30-year-old was snorkelling about 30ft off Anse Lazio beach on the island of Praslin when the 6ft shark struck. He is reported to have lost an arm in the second fatal attack there in the space of two weeks.

His wife was sunbathing when she heard his cries for help. A tourist in a dinghy is reported to have dragged the man ashore, where onlookers battled in vain to save his life.

The newlyweds were last night reported to be Ian Redmond, 30, and Gemma Houghton, 27, from Lancashire.

Eyewitness Chantal Andre, said: “I went to the hospital with the man’s wife and it was just awful. She wasn’t crying at all, she just couldn’t believe he was dead. I suppose she was in total shock.”

Praslin is a popular destination for British honeymooners and the beach is regularly voted one of the best in the world.

Director for tourism Alain St Ange said: “We are taking this very seriously. If there is a rogue shark there we will try to catch it. We have requested shark experts from South Africa to come over to Seychelles to help.”
