Handover date set for Kyrgyz leader

Kyrgyzstan president-elect Almazbek Atambayev will take office on 1 December in the first peaceful handover of power in the former Soviet republic’s two decades of independence.

Authorities in the central Asian republic hope the event will spell the end of political turbulence which followed the overthrow in April 2010 of president Kurmanbek Bakiyev.
