France deportations hit record level

France deported a record number of illegal migrants last year, according to new figures, in the latest sign that president Nicolas Sarkozy’s government has hardened its stance on immigration in the run-up to the presidential election.

An unprecedented 32,912 foreigners were expelled in 2011, a 17 per cent increase from the year before.
