Father takes his own life in protest at government inaction on Tiananmen Square

The father of a man killed in the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown has hanged himself in protest after two decades of failed attempts to seek government redress, a families support group said yesterday.

The Tiananmen Mothers said the body of Ya Weilin, 73, was found in an unused underground carpark below his residential complex in Beijing.

An obituary on its website said he had carried a note that detailed the death of his son, Ya Aiguo, and declared that he would die in protest.
