Eta man given 105-year term

A FORMER leader of the Basque separatist group Eta has been convicted of ordering the killing of a politician and his body-guard, and sentenced to 105 years in jail.

Yesterday’s conviction was the first of an Eta member since the group announced it was giving up violence as a way to achieve Basque independence.

Francisco Javier Garcia Gaztelu was jailed for his role in the killing of Socialist Fernando Buesa, who died – along with his bodyguard, Jorge Diez – in a car bomb attack in the Basque capital Vitoria in 2000.
