Dutch tighten rules on drugs

THE Dutch government plans to reclassify high-strength cannabis with hard drugs such as cocaine.

Its decision means most of the marijuana now sold in the Netherlands’ cannabis cafés would have to be substituted with milder forms.

The move is seen as the latest step in a drive to reverse the country’s famed liberal policies towards drug use.

Critics said the move would be difficult to enforce. Possession is illegal but people found with small amounts are not prosecuted and the drug is sold openly in designated cafés. Growers are routinely prosecuted if caught.
