Captain under investigation as Genoa ship kills 7

THE captain of an Italian cargo ship, the Jolly Nero, was placed under investigation yesterday by police for alleged manslaughter after his ship rammed the dock at Genoa and toppled a control tower, killing at least seven people.

The incident happened at 11pm local time as port staff were changing shifts. There were 13 people in the tower when it was struck.

Prosecutor Michele de Lecce said yesterday the harbour pilot on the bridge of the Jolly Nero — a 781ft, 40,594 tonne vessel owned by Genoese company Ignazio Messina & Co — was also under investigation.
