He was initially detained at Bridewell Garda Station after the High Court yesterday sanctioned a European Arrest Warrant from the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Mr Adams, who is expected to contest the extradition, has persistently denied the allegations.

A short time later, the republican leader's brother was brought to the nearby Four Courts flanked by two gardai.

A brief hearing on his extradition was expected to take place in front of the President of the High Court Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns this afternoon.

Detective Sergeant Jim Kirwan told the court 54-year-old Liam Adams arrived at the Bridewell by appointment where the arrest warrant was executed.

He is facing 18 charges of abuse against his daughter Aine, who waived her right to anonymity, from March 1977 to March 1983.

The senior officer told the court Mr Adams replied when arrested: "I just want to say I'm not guilty of that."

Mr Adams, dressed in smart dark suit, pale blue shirt and striped tie, spoke briefly during the short hearing only to confirm his name.

A bail hearing will take place at 4pm.
