Baby Giulia heads home with mum as France’s first couple begin family life

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy headed home yesterday with her newborn girl Giulia, the first baby born to a sitting French president.

Ms Bruni-Sarkozy left the Paris maternity clinic with her daughter and bodyguards, after giving birth last Wednesday.

President Nicolas Sarkozy said he and his wife felt a “very profound happiness” over the birth of their first child together. He has three sons from his two previous marriages. She has one son from a previous relationship.

Mr Sarkozy is expected to seek a second term in six months.

Ms Bruni-Sarkozy, in an interview on France 2 television recorded two days before giving birth, defended her husband’s track record and said that she hoped he would run as a candidate, having suggested in the past that she was against it.

“It’s his decision. I observe all this from very close up so you might say I’m not impartial, but I see the huge amount of work he does for my country. I hope he’ll be a candidate,” she said.

Mr Sarkozy himself was in Brussels for the summit of European Union leaders.
