Australia forced into refugee rethink

Australia will be forced to suspend its plans for offshore processing of asylum seekers after a court ruled a refugee swap deal with Malaysia was illegal, immigration minister Chris Bowen said yesterday.

The government will look at options, including an attempt to change the migration law, he said. It has been under pressure on refugee policy amid a surge in asylum-seekers’ boats arriving in Australian waters.
