AFGHANISTAN

A BUS careened off of a mountain road in southern Afghanistan yesterday, killing 35 people.

The packed vehicle was travelling through Kandahar province on its way to Kabul when the driver lost control and the bus rolled over several times. Another 27 people were injured in the crash. Such accidents are common in Afghanistan, where roads and vehicles are often poorly maintained.

A string of insurgent attacks across the country killed a further five people.
