Activists fail to appear at trial

Five activists jailed for backing political reforms in the United Arab Emirates have failed to appear in court even as authorities opened their trial to the public for the first time.

The boycott of the proceedings was an act of protest to demand bail.

The Emirates rulers’ move to open yesterday’s session appears to be part of attempts to ease criticism over the previously closed-door proceedings, which reflect the strict limits on political activities in the UAE.

The five on trial include a prominent blogger.
