250 firefighters battle major LA blaze

TWO MAJOR roads in central Los Angeles have been closed amid a massive fire nearby.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman David Ortiz said more than 250 firefighters are battling the blaze, which can be seen for miles around.

The fire is burning at a building site planned to be a tall residential structure. It is not believed that anyone was inside at the time.

Mr Ortiz said the 101 freeway is closed in both directions, while the California Highway Patrol said transition lanes between the 110 and 101 freeways are shut.

Mr Ortiz said the cause and extent of the fire are not yet known. There are no immediate reports of injuries.
